Hair Extensions FAQ

Human hair is in some ways like fingerprints. No two people will have the exact same hair. Human hair used to make hair extensions and wigs can be single drawn (come from one individual) or double drawn ( from one or more individuals). Since single drawn hair comes from one person, the hair tends to be more uniform. The cuticles are usually in the same cuticle direction and there is more consistency in quality and color.

Single drawn hair is usually considered a higher quality hair but this is not always the case. Not all single drawn hair is healthy hair. It is also possible to buy high quality cuticle hair in double drawn hair. Health and hair care practices are the main factors contributing to healthy hair. What is important to know is that the quality of the hair, hair color, and hair texture will always vary.

Most manufacturers do a fairly decent job of categorizing and producing products within the standard color ranges. Industry stock colors are: #1, 1B, #2, #4. You will probably see differences in the colors even though the numbers are the same. You might find that a color #2 hair product with one supplier might look more like a color #1B with another. Always allow for some variation in color, texture and quality when purchasing human hair. You will never receive the exact same hair.  A good tip is to order the color closest to your natural color. You may correct the color by lightening or darkening the hair using a hair coloring product. This is what most stylist do to get the optimum color match.

If you have a low tolerance for variation, we would recommend synthetic hair. Synthetic hair is made with man made materials and can be reproduced with very little variation. Also, synthetic hair colors usually run a shade darker than human hair. Color #2 will be very dark, more like a black brown. Color #4 (medium brown) would look more like color #2 (dark brown).

Online color charts are intended as a guide only. The problem with online color charts is that the color display will vary depending on the computer type and monitor. So, it is not advisable to rely only on the online color chart. If you are new to hair extensions and have no idea of what the colors are like, we would recommend that you purchase a hair color ring specific to the product you want to order. Even this is not precise but it will give you a very good idea of what the color will look like.

Preparing Your Hair Product -  Proper care is the key to extending the life of your weave piece. We recommend that hair be washed before application to remove any residue leftover from processing. Check the weft for  gaps and slippage. Some shedding is normal however, we recommend you reinforce the wefting with nylon thread to minimize slippage. Slippage is most likely to occur during washing and conditioning. Some loosening of curly style may also be expected especially with longer length hair. The weight of the hair tends to pull the curl to the ends.

Quality Considerations - When ordering GRD4+ and higher quality in curly or wavy hair, expect loosening of the curl. Softer hair is always better but it does not hold curls or waves as well as lower quality (stiffer) hair. Lower quality hair is usually thicker and less soft. For this reason the curls hold better. If you are ordering Remy or other GRD4+ or higher product, you will experience loosening of the wave or curl. In this case you may use a heating appliance or roller set to reset the curl.

Taking Care of Your Extensions

  • Wash the hair in the shower taking care to keep the hair hanging loose.

  • Avoid cheap shampoos as they tend to contain more detergent than conditioners and will dry out the hair.  Use a salon quality shampoo. Not all salon products should be used with hair extensions. See our list of recommended products below.

  • Avoid cheap conditioners as the conditioners tend to be watered down giving less than the needed amount of conditioning to keep the hair from drying out. Remember that this hair is not growing out of the scalp and is not being replenished with natural oils.

  • Distribute shampoo and condioners evenly throughout the hair. Squeeze the product through the hair.  Avoid scrubbing, rubbing or bunching the hair together. Condition the hair well with a good creme based  conditioner.

NOTE: If you are planning to use a hair bonding product, shampoo the hair well but do not use any  conditioners or styling products prior to applying the extensions. Condition the hair well after the extensions are in.

  • After washing and conditioning apply a good spray leave on conditioning product. Use this product to freshen the hair between washing. Never use plain water.

  • Pat excess water from the hair and allow the hair to dry completely before going to bed. Never sleep with with the hair wet or damp.

  • Let the hair air dry whenever possible

  • If you use a blow dryer, dry out the wefted part of the hairpiece first. Then finish drying the hair from the ends up.  Avoid pulling the hair while wet.

  • Avoid using excess heat

  • Loosen hair every morning and before going to bed. Most tightly curled styles should never be combed.  Shake out curly styles, comb through straight styles and use a wide tooth comb or fingers to loosen wavy hair.

  • Avoid applying direct heat to the bonded area.

  • Salt from perspiration, if allowed to buildup on the hair will strip the hair making it hard and brittle. If you excercise, make a practice of rinsing and conditioning the hair after each workout. Shampooing after a workout is not always necessary.

  • Use a mild stringent on the scalp in between washings. Witch hazel works well.

  • If you use a blow dryer use one with a diffusing tool to better circulate the heat.

  • If you have bonded extensions, avoid applying heat to the bonded areas

  • Most hair extensions have been processed. For this reason, we don't recommend you color hair extensions. If you find you must color to get a better color match, try coloring your natural hair to match the hair piece. Additional chemical treatment on hair extensions can make the hair frizzy dull and difficult to manage.
